What are the Benefits of Buying a Used Car?

If you’re in the market for a vehicle, you have two choices: new or used. While purchasing a brand new automobile is something many people fantasize about, it isn’t always the best option. There are several distinct advantages to choosing a used vehicle, including the following:

#1. Most of the depreciation has already occurred

According to Carfax, new vehicles depreciate by around 20 percent during the first year. After that, you can expect an automobile to depreciate approximately 10 percent per year for the next four years. You’ll naturally experience the least amount of depreciation if you purchase a car that is five years old or older. However, you can also reduce it significantly just by choosing a model that is between one and four years old.

#2. They cost less to own

Nerd Wallet reports that the average cost of new car ownership amounts to just over $700 per month. This is based on an average of 15,000 miles per year, and includes the cost of a payment, insurance, gas, and maintenance expenses. With a used vehicle not only will your payment be less, but you also will not have to shell out as much for insurance, taxes, and title fees. As such, your savings could easily amount to several hundred dollars per month.

#3. They are often just as reliable

At one time, a vehicle with 100,000 miles was considered near the end of its mechanical limits. However, this is no longer the case. As Consumer Reports notes, most vehicles these days can last 200,000 miles or more. So long as the previous owner has kept up with maintenance, you do not necessarily have to let high mileage scare you.

#4. There’s a better selection

When shopping for new cars, many people discover that there are only a limited number of models that will fit their budget. That’s not usually a problem with used vehicles, as you will likely find many makes, models, and years available in your price range. In particular, those looking for a pickup truck or SUV are often able to afford a used vehicle, whereas a brand new model would likely be out of their reach.

#5. Parts are more readily available, and also cost less

Automakers don’t really manufacture many replacement parts until a vehicle is a few years old because there isn’t much demand for them. You also won’t find a lot of new car parts available in junk yards right away. This means that if your vehicle does need repairs, you’ll find it difficult and expensive to locate parts for a brand new vehicle.

Finding parts is much easier when your automobile is a few years old because enough time has passed for them to make it to market. If you can’t locate what you need in an auto parts store, chances are it is sitting in a junk yard somewhere.

Here at Active Auto Sales, these are just a few benefits to buying a used car from our lot rather than a brand new one somewhere else. Stop by our Hatboro or Philadelphia location to see the latest selection and find a pre-owned vehicle that is just right for you.
